Opus Arena

Located in the western district of Osijek, on a site immediately beside the River Drava, the stadium and training complex was conceived as a major new home for FC Osijek and as a catalyst for the wider development of sports architecture in the city. At the time, it was described as the first completely new, fully developed football stadium to be built in Croatia in almost fifty years. The project combines a compact football venue with the supporting spaces and public infrastructure required for a contemporary sports complex. Opus Arena currently has a capacity of 12,800 seats, with the option to expand it.

Its architectural language is deliberately simple, clear and immediately recognisable. Three elements define the exterior. The first is the large white roof structure, approximately 185 × 150 metres, which rises about 23 metres above the ground. It fully covers the stands and extends beyond the stadium perimeter, providing shade and protection from rain to the surrounding circulation and public areas.

The second element is a rhythmic series of slender white circular columns that visually connect the hovering roof to the ground.

The third is a translucent façade envelope that allows daylight to reach the facilities beneath the stands. The entire stadium sits on a four-step platform, giving the site a measured monumentality.

Integrated architectural lighting gives the envelope a second identity after dark, transforming the stadium into an illuminated urban landmark during matches and public events. Together, the roof, columns and façade create a coherent building that is monumental without being visually heavy. The design treats the external concourse as part of the civic experience, making the stadium not only a venue for football but also a welcoming and legible public destination within the Pampas sports district.
